Course Description
Weather, Earth, and the Universe
In this course, students explore the fascinating systems that shape our planet and the universe beyond it. Through hands-on investigations, discussions, and real-world examples, students will develop scientific thinking skills while learning how Earth and space are connected.
Weather and Water:
Students will study the atmosphere, weather patterns, and oceans of the Earth. Topics include air pressure, wind, clouds, storms, and the water cycle. Students will learn how weather is measured and how oceans affect weather systems.
Planet Earth:
This unit focuses on Earth’s structure and systems, including the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. Students will explore rocks and minerals, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, landforms, and Earth’s natural resources, gaining an understanding of how Earth changes over time.
Our Universe:
Students will investigate space science concepts such as the solar system, stars, and the motion of celestial bodies. They will learn how Earth fits into the larger universe and explore current space discoveries and technologies.
Throughout the course, students will practice scientific inquiry, data analysis, and critical thinking. Emphasis is placed on observation, experimentation, collaboration, and making connections between science and everyday life.
Homework
Class time will consist of guided note taking, group discussions, and hands-on activities. Throughout the week, students will complete reading assignments, answer study questions, and record observations from class experiments. All of the material will first be introduced in class. Students will print the homework that is posted weekly to Google Classroom.
Approximate homework: 1-2 hours per week
Students will have 2-3 at-home projects during the year.
