Course Description
This year-long experience is broken into Art History during the fall semester and Art for High School Students during the spring semester.
ART HISTORY introduces students to the fundamental concepts, movements, and artists in art history. We will look at art from a Christian perspective and discuss how we can learn and appreciate art as Christ's followers. Through lectures, discussions, readings, and projects, students will develop an understanding of various art forms, styles, and their historical contexts. Students will engage in light sketching or drawing. Supplies provided.
SURVEY OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDIO ART
From the earliest expressions of art to contemporary art movements, students will explore shape, line, light, color, and more. Blending art analysis and hands-on creation, they will produce amazing 2D and 3D art pieces based on their discoveries. Through various mediums and materials, students will develop their own artistic skills in drawing and design. Ultimately, they will experience the excitement of an idea coming to life through their own creativity, problem solving, and hard work.
Classes will consist of:
● Continued analysis of historic art up to contemporary art practices
● Learning and implementing foundational art and design skills
● Creative processes, from rough sketches to refined final projects
● Demonstrations in a variety of approaches and techniques
● Exploring materials and proper medium techniques
● Group presentations and critiques
● Art and Design vocabulary and identification of these in art works
● Visual literacy and critical thinking
● Develop unique ideas and expressive abilities through visual art
Homework
ART HISTORY (Fall) Homework will be varied from writing an essay on certain topics, studying for quizzes, and completing projects. We will take one field trip outside of our normal TCC days. We typically go to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. A date and time will be provided soon after the semester starts.
SURVEY OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDIO ART (Spring)
Students will be required to work outside of class on weekly sketchbook assignments, as well as a couple of larger, month long projects.
Approximate time for homework will vary, but should not be more than 2-3 hours per week. With all creative practices, you get out of it what you put into it. Art takes time. Building skills takes effort. Growth comes from established roots.

Notes
ART HISTORY: Please make sure your student is mature enough to handle some discussions on nudity in art, content on artists’ lives that may include their mental health, and they have an interest in Art as a whole.
SURVEY OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDIO ART: Class time will include short lectures recapping art history, reviewing foundational practices, presentation of finished work, and short drawing exercises. Students will then work independently on their daily/weekly projects. Class time will also be utilized for individual creative advancement and technique instruction. Students will be encouraged to develop skills and build their creative instincts and abilities.
Students looking to refine and improve existing skills, develop new skills, and/or possibly start or add work to their portfolio can request additional instruction and direction. This will not necessarily add more assignments, but increase expectations of the execution of their individual art work and creative processes.
Contact the instructor with questions.
