Course Description
Grammar/Writing: This class will start with the program, Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW), using a gentle introduction to the fundamentals of grammar and writing. Students will learn the basic parts of speech, end-mark punctuation, phrases, clauses, and homophones. No prior grammar knowledge is needed. The writing portion includes humorous, incremental, and effective writing lessons. Students will do lessons in class instructed by Mrs. Raymond and complete specific homework assignments throughout the week.
Literature Study: Students will read 4-5 age-appropriate chapter books, discuss basic story elements, answer comprehension questions, and a book report or project after each one.
Handwriting: Students will be completing cursive handwriting lessons in class. Practice at home is optional, but encouraged. Grades will be in class participaiton only. Students MUST be able to individually write on their own in class.
Homework
Homework will include grammar practice, writing assignments, literature reading, and answering questions over reading passages. Students will be responsible for homework each week, as well as one project per novel.
Approximate time for homework each week outside of class: 1-3 hours

Notes
Students will enjoy the "class pet" (small stuffed animal) that will travel to their homes in a rotation. Each week, the "pet" writes a brief diary entry of what he/she experienced while at your home.
