Course Description

This course helps high school students discover potential career paths, understand their personal strengths, and develop essential professional skills. Through guided exploration, hands-on activities, and real-world experiences, students will develop practical skills for career preparation, gain real-world experience through job shadowing experiences, and create a personalized career plan.


Course Objectives


● Identify personal interests, talents, and potential career matches

● Understand career pathway options

● Engage with professionals through guest speaker sessions

● Gain real-world career exposure through informational interviewing and job shadowing

● Create professional documents like resumes and cover letters

● Practice job interview techniques and professional communication skills

● Explore educational and training options, including trade schools

● Build confidence in future career planning


Job Shadowing Component


● Students must complete 2 hours of job shadowing at one workplace

Homework

Up to 1-2 hours per week. Assignments might include reading, personal self-discovery exercises, conversations with parents, or projects. All work is intended to be helpful and useful for career research.

Graduation Requirements
Notes

When available, students will have the opportunity to take the ASVAB, a comprehensive career exploration assessment. Additionally the course may offer optional off-campus visits to colleges or career-focused institutions.


Students are expected to maintain an organized system for class materials - a spiral notebook is required for taking notes in class and writing reflections for homework, and a sturdy folder is required for organizing handouts
