Course Description

This class is designed for both 5th and 6th grade students. While all students will use new novels and writing assignments, the coursework is intentionally structured with optional 6th-grade extensions to allow for appropriate challenge and growth.

The primary focus of this course is to develop a strong foundation in grammar through repetition and a variety of engaging learning techniques. Students will begin by learning the fundamentals of well-written paragraphs and introductory essays, gradually building these skills in a structured, foundational way that prepares them for advanced language arts courses.

Through reading rich literature, students will be encouraged to develop creative writing, critical thinking skills, and strong reading comprehension.

No prior knowledge of grammar concepts is required.

Homework

Homework is designed to reinforce concepts taught in class and help students build strong, confident language skills. Assignments are posted weekly in Google Classroom by the end of the school day and should be completed prior to the next class meeting.

Most homework will be completed on paper and turned in during class, with occasional digital activities submitted online. On average, students can expect to spend approximately 2–4 hours per week on homework, though this may vary.

Families are encouraged to review assignments at the beginning of the week and create a plan for completion rather than waiting until the night before class. If a student needs modifications or if the workload ever feels overwhelming, open communication is always welcome. Homework is intended to support learning—not create frustration.
