Course Description
Physics can be intimidating. This course’s objective is to take the fear out and provide a setting to learn about the fundamentals of physics in an engaging and practical way.
For students working toward STEM based careers, this class will provide a foundation and confidence for college level coursework or career training.
For non-STEM paths, this class will give you the vocabulary and basic understanding of physics in the world around you. Having this knowledge will be helpful in a wide range of areas as physics is all around us everyday. And who knows - you might just fall in love with physics and start considering new opportunities.
Each class will cover a fundamental physics topic and will include a combination of theory, example problems, demonstrations, labs, and a discussion of real world applications. An emphasis will be placed on the hands-on and practical aspects of each topic and student discussion as the theory is introduced.
Homework
Students should expect group discussions, observing demonstrations, hands-on labs, note taking and regular short quizzes. Each student will also have 2-3 short presentations and one longer presentation over a project each semester.
Assignments of topics for presentations and projects will take student interests into consideration.
Homework will be a combination of practice problems and/or at home experiments over the previous class topic and a variety of prep work for the upcoming topic. The prep work may include things such as reading, videos, and independent research.
Approximate homework time per week is 4 hours/week.
10th graders may be approved for this course if the math requirement has been met. Contact the instructor.
