Course Description

This course is designed to work on individual disciplines, organizational skills, study skills, and etiquette. Our goal is to help them be successful in academic classes using hands-on activities, a student planner, and various assignments and projects.

Topics to be covered:

  • Personality awareness - getting to know our strengths and weaknesses

  • Getting organized - creating the right study environment

  • Setting goals and priorities - learning to do first things first

  • Using a planner – what is it and how can it help you

  • Google Classroom - getting familiar with it and how to use it

  • Managing time - learning to stay on top of it all

  • Reading and note-taking - figuring out what's important, different approaches, etc.

  • ADD: How to present in front of your peers.

  • Effective ways to study

  • Health and wellness to help us perform at our best.

  • Growth mindset topics

  • Etiquette- touching on different topics like phone etiquette (for when we have one) thank you notes -- when to give and how, how to behave in class and large gatherings, etc.

Homework

Much of the homework for this class will be using the planner every week for each class. The student will be responsible for filling this out at home to include all their assignments for the week, goals, and information we add during class.  Other homework will include very light prep work when we start class presentations in the second semester, and other miscellaneous tasks.

Graduation Requirements

None

Notes

For this age, parents can help their child the most by sitting with them to learn Google Classroom, providing a routine for school work, and creating a designated area for them to work, without interruptions.  It is helpful to encourage students to pack up their school things the night before so it is ready in the morning. These behaviors will reinforce what students are learning in class.

Class fee covers planner provided by instructor.
