Course Description

This course is designed to equip students with the essential skills they need to thrive—not just in academic classes, but in school and life as a whole. Through hands-on activities, guided use of a student planner, and built-in peer support, students will learn how to take ownership of their learning, manage their responsibilities with confidence, and develop habits that lead to long-term success.

Throughout the course, students will explore practical, real-world skills such as setting goals and priorities (learning how to do first things first), using a planner as a powerful tool—not just a place to write assignments—and creating an organized, effective study environment. They’ll gain strategies for managing time, staying on top of deadlines, and planning projects like book reports, science projects, and presentations from start to finish.

Students will also develop strong academic tools including reading comprehension, note-taking, test-taking strategies for different types of assessments, and foundational research skills using reference materials. Along the way, they’ll study organizational behavior, discover their own personality traits, and learn how their unique learning style impacts the way they work and succeed.

The course culminates in a meaningful second-semester project that allows students to apply everything they’ve learned—building confidence, independence, and skills they’ll use for years to come.

Homework expectations are simple and intentional. Students will take meaningful notes, actively participate in engaging class discussions, and complete hands-on activities designed to reinforce learning in a fun, memorable way.

Homework

Homework for this class centers on one powerful habit: using a planner every day for every class. Any additional assignments for this course will directly support the student’s other academic classes. For example, students may be asked to record each teacher’s late-work policy or organize upcoming assignments from another course. The goal is to help students practice real-life academic skills that immediately benefit their entire schedule.

Parent Responsibilities:
Parents play an important role in reinforcing these skills at home. Establishing a consistent homework routine—such as working at the same time each day in a designated, distraction-free space—helps students build strong study habits and produce their best work. Encouraging students to pack up school materials the night before ensures a smoother, more confident start to each day. These simple, supportive habits at home directly reinforce what students are learning in class and set them up for long-term success.
