Course Description

The purpose of this course is to give students the experience of working as a team to launch and manage a single small business. In this collaborative environment, the entire class operates as a professional agency to solve problems and serve the TCC community. Students will take on specific leadership and departmental roles (such as Finance, Marketing, and Operations), manage a budget, meet professional deadlines, and experience how a business  runs by depending on their teammates and seeing how their individual work contributes to the group's success.

The first semester culminates in a Pitch Night, where the team must present a business plan to a panel of 'investors'—including parents. To receive their seed money for the second semester, the team must prove their idea is solid, well-researched, and ready to launch.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Collaborate as a team to choose one viable business idea that serves the TCC community.

  • Organize the company by assigning professional roles and responsibilities to each student.

  • Manage the class budget by tracking expenses and calculating potential profits.

  • Design and execute a group marketing plan to promote the company brand.

  • Communicate effectively as a team to solve daily business problems and make decisions.

  • Lead the business through its official launch and operation.

  • Finalize the business at the end of the year by balancing the books and distributing the earnings.

Homework

Approximate time outside of class: 1-2 hours per week. Assignments are structured as "Work Tickets" based on the student's specific role in the business. Tasks may include reading, drafting project deliverables (like social media posts or budget spreadsheets), or having brief online check-ins with other students.
