Course Description
Our Yearbook class is a creative team that documents life from the inside and designs the story of our school year. The class functions like a real job and asks students to take ownership. It’s a collaborative, high-output, work-hard-play-hard environment where creativity and responsibility go hand in hand, and your effort directly impacts the entire team and the yearbook we create.
You’ll learn how to spot the moments that define a year - inside jokes, wins and letdowns, overlooked details, big energy - and document them through photography, design, and writing with intention. This class is about paying attention to real life as it’s happening and turning those moments into something meaningful.
Each week, you’ll work through hands-on projects: capturing strong images, experimenting with bold layouts, designing graphic elements, refining captions, and shaping page spreads. Your work builds skill and confidence over time and becomes part of a growing creative portfolio that shows how your eye and voice develop.
By the end of the year, you’ll leave with real creative experience and a yearbook that carries this school year into TCC’s legacy.
Class Structure
First Semester: Learning + Skill Building
The first semester is photography- and design-heavy. This is where you learn how to see, shoot, design, and think like a creative team. You’ll build skills in photography, layout, typography, and visual storytelling through hands-on projects and guided practice. This semester is about experimenting, learning the tools, and finding your creative footing.
Second Semester: Production
The second semester is when we shift into production mode: designing spreads, conducting interviews, writing captions and copy, refining layouts, and shaping the final yearbook.
Classwork & Homework
Most of the work is designed to happen during class time so students can collaborate, get feedback, and problem-solve together. There will be occasional homework, such as photo assignments, interviews, or some design work; but the goal is to keep the majority of the workload in class whenever possible.
Homework
You can expect to spend one hour outside of class, however projects may take more time.
