Course Description
High School Astronomy is a general lab science course designed to help students explore and appreciate the wonders of the universe through observation, hands-on activities, and thoughtful discussion. Students will study the stars, planets, and galaxies while developing an understanding of Earth’s place in God’s created order. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to approach astronomy with curiosity, humility, and respect for both scientific discovery and faith.
Lessons combine foundational astronomy concepts with practical labs, guided observations, and age-appropriate analysis of current space science discoveries. Students will learn how astronomers gather and interpret evidence while reflecting on how order, design, and scale in the universe point to deeper questions about creation and purpose.
Topics include the history of astronomy, observing the night sky, tools used by astronomers, the Sun–Earth–Moon system, planets, stars, galaxies, and recent developments in space exploration. Emphasis is placed on careful observation, basic scientific reasoning, and developing a lifelong sense of wonder about the heavens.
Course Objectives:
Build a basic understanding of key astronomical concepts and celestial phenomena
Encourage careful observation and appreciation of God’s creation
Introduce students to the scientific method as used in astronomy
Develop scientific literacy through reading and summarizing current space-related articles
Foster curiosity, responsibility, and thoughtful engagement with science
Homework
Homework will include regular textbook readings, vocabulary work, simple projects with materials commonly found at home (e.g. creating a sundial and uploading images of it for credit), and space-related article summaries.
Some assignments will involve outdoor observations of the night sky, which may occasionally require students to observe later in the evening depending on the season and astronomical events. Families will be given advance notice of these assignments whenever possible.
Students should expect approximately 2-3 hours of homework per week.
