Course Description
This beginning language arts class will reinforce basic language arts skills for 4-5th grade students. This introductory class is designed to give students experience in an engaging and fun group setting. We will cover many concepts in the class, but parents may choose to supplement with additional language arts instruction at home.
Literature Studies: Students will read and interact with 4-5 age-appropriate chapter books, discuss basic story elements, practice reading strategies, identify the author's purpose, and a book report or project.
Vocabulary/Mechanics: Students will develop these skills using context clues, building vocabulary through reading, and practicing correct punctuation and capitalization rules.
Writing: Students will develop writing skills through freewriting, journaling, and responding to reading selections.
Grammar: Students will be introduced to basic grammar rules and concepts. Including, but not limited to, verbs, nouns, adjectives, prepositions, pronouns, etc.
Class time will consist of literature discussions, guided note-taking, and guided skills practice.
Homework
Throughout the week, students will complete reading assignments, engage in skills practice, and keep a (simple) journal.
All of the skills and literature will first be introduced in class. Students will print the homework posted weekly to Google Classroom.
Students will enjoy the "class pet" (small stuffed animal) that will travel to their homes in a rotation. Each week, the "pet" writes a brief diary entry of what he experienced while at your home.
