Course Description
While History doesn't repeat itself, it does rhyme and we can learn to see themes that cross across centuries and millennia and apply those to current World situations.
Some events covered include early church history, the founding of Islam, Africa, Europe and the Crusades, Asia, New Worlds Explored, Renaissance and Reformation, and the Elizabethan Era.
This class reads The Comedies by Dante* (Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradisio). The fall semester wraps with creatively creating our own Rings of Hell and the spring semester with a self-reflection paper on all three Comedies. The Comedies will be provided. Geography is also given prominence; where history happens sometimes is vital in understanding how or why something happens.
While this class can entirely stand alone, there is an overall goal for all history students. In taking all four years of history, students will have an overall understanding of human history from the beginning to the year 2000, knowing all people are subject to the human condition and God is moving whether we see Him or not. Understanding history includes understanding different perspectives, motivations, biases, and even locations; being able to sift primary and secondary sources to determine a viewpoint consistent with the known understanding of events; and having a grasp on the subject to discuss intelligently and understand this subject in multiple contexts.
Homework
Students will engage in presentations/lectures, learn note taking, class discussion, independent study, classical literature, original texts, memorization, and even food, to use the past as a lens to understand our current world. Students will print homework assignments from Google Classroom to complete weekly assignments. Each student will also keep a binder of all notes, maps, homework, timeline, and handouts, for a final grade.
To aid your student in the above task, you must have a working printer as there will be documents that must be printed each week and brought to class. The instructor will provide certain handouts, maps, exams, and class activities, and students will be required to print some pages at home.
