Course Description
This is an advanced class that will prepare students for all levels of College Chemistry. It will move at a faster pace than High School Chemistry. Students need a strong math foundation to be successful in this class.

Chemistry is the study of the structure, composition, and properties of matter. Students will be introduced to the study of atoms and elements using the Periodic Table of Elements, the principles of bonding, and the compounds they form through chemical reactions. Exciting experiments will allow the student to visualize and understand more of how and why reactions occur between substances. This course is designed to fulfill the high school requirements of Chemistry while also establishing a foundation for topics that will be covered in depth in college Chemistry. Students will grow in appreciation and awe of God’s power and will leave with an appreciation for the science of Chemistry. Time in class will consist of lectures and lab. Tests, labs, homework, and quizzes will be included in the course grade.

Objectives:

Fundamentals of Chemistry
Students will learn the fundamentals of chemistry including classification, properties, and changes in matter. Students will investigate solutions, mixtures, atomic and Lewis structures, and learn molecular geometry.
Measurements in Chemistry
Students will be familiar with the metric system, units of measurement, scientific notation, and significant figures. Students will learn stoichiometry and will be able to do conversions related to chemistry.
Elements in Chemistry
Students will use the periodic table to understand the components of elements, atomic mass, and the mole concept. They will also use this information to compose formulas and equations
Chemical Reactions
Students will be able to identify, balance, and predict different types of chemical reactions including formation/decomposition, complete/incomplete combustion, single/double displacement, acid/base, reduction/oxidation, exothermic/endothermic, and equilibrium reactions.
