Course Description
While Latin is no longer spoken in the community, it is far from a dead language. Half of all English words are from Latin. This percentage increases to 80-90% when English words are at least 3 syllables. Latin is excellent to reinforce English vocabulary and grammar. It is also the basis for Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and even Romanian, the Romance Languages. It is very alive in our western culture, literature, legal and medical fields, even popular culture. Latin also works the same part of the brain as certain math.
The objective of this class will be to give students an excellent foundational education of the Latin language.
Students will learn vocabulary, the declining of nouns and adjectives, the conjugation of verbs, in addition to strengthening grammar skills. They will work on translations as well as learn interesting Roman history.
Latin 2 will continue through these same books. With ever increasing difficulty and mastery, we will translate passages about Roman culture, early Church histories and famous orators/philosophers.
