  • Course Description

The objective of this course is to prepare students to communicate thoughts and ideas through oral presentations. This course will focus on sharpening a student’s skills in communication, thinking, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will give 7-10 oral presentations a year.


Class periods will consist of interactive lectures, demonstrations, cooperative work periods, and peer-to-peer teamwork and feedback.  


We will approach oral presentations like building a house. First, thought must be given to the type of house desired, the location to build the house, and the blueprints. Building an oral presentation equates to a knowledge of the audience and topic selection. Next, the frame of the house is built (the outline and main point of the speech). Then, the house is built with walls, plumbing, electrical, and fixtures (the supporting facts and stories).  Finally, the house is given a personality through interior design choices (the tips on how to speak successfully, with confidence, and make it unique).


We will begin the year learning the basics of writing and delivering an oral presentation.  Our class will begin with shorter presentations of 90 seconds and progress to 4-6 minute presentations. The goal is to create an encouraging, creative environment where students can find their unique voice and how to share it with the world.

Time spent out of class will vary each week based on assignments. Usually, homework can be completed in an hour each week, but time may increase when preparing for presentations.
